Surrender?

surrender

Last week I wrote about how many of us want the Savior part of Christ but not always the Lordship part. In other words, we want to benefits of spending eternity in Heaven but not the Lord-of-my-life on earth part: http://wp.me/p1QSbw-8n

And I left with you with the following questions: How do we get the Lord part as well as the Savior part? How do we know if God is Lord of our lives? Or to say it another way how do we become a Disciple? Read the rest of this entry »

Savior and Lord?

sin

With Christmas three weeks away our attention to turns to the birth of our Savior. Last year I wrote a series on my favorite Christmas movies and shows (here is the link to one: http://wp.me/p1QSbw-53) – this year I want to write about something that has been on my mind a lot over the last few weeks.

Have you ever noticed we want the benefits of things in our lives but not the cost? For example we want the protection of the police but not the speed trap part. We want the paycheck and benefits from our employers but not the boss’ mandates. We want to be in shape but not the exercise part. Our children want their allowance but not the chores part. The list goes on and on. Read the rest of this entry »

Fill Up?

coffe cupAs I wrote about last spring Alli graduated from high school in May. As part of the baccalaureate ceremony everyone in the family was asked to write a letter to their son/daughter and then read the letter to them at the ceremony. Needless to say this was a very emotional event. Many friends had warned us Read the rest of this entry »

Sweet Revenge?

revenge is sweet

Last week I wrote about resentment and forgiveness (http://wp.me/p1QSbw-7B) – this is part 2 about revenge and forgiveness.

I like to read signs outside of churches for their charming, sometimes funny, sometimes poignant messages.  Here are a few memorable ones:

  • “Free trip to Heaven; details inside”
  • “Prevent burning – get some Son protection”
  • “Life has many choices. Eternity has two. What’s yours?”
  • “Salvation: Free – Eternity in Heaven: Priceless”

One of my favorites Read the rest of this entry »

Irreconcilable Differences?

family fued

North Point is currently doing a series on a subject we all can relate to – family. This link also has discussion questions if you want to do a study with your small group: http://www.northpoint.org/messages/future-family.

It was the 4th message that really caught my attention. In this message Andy describes a state most of us have come to at some point in our family lives – a point where we tell ourselves a lie about family – “I don’t care.”  For example: Read the rest of this entry »

Home Sweet Home?

Have you ever lived in a place you knew you weren’t staying long? When we first moved to Atlanta in 1993 we lived in an apartment temporarily until we could move into our house. While I loved not having a yard and house to maintain it was unsettling to know we were in a temporary situation. It was uncomfortable, it was strange, it was not where we were meant to be – it was only temporary until Read the rest of this entry »

The Real You?

Holy Spirit

An old friend of ours was college roommates with Orel Hershiser, record-setting MLB pitcher, while at Bowling Green State University. This friend said something I think about often: “That is not the real Orel Hershiser.” What he meant was Read the rest of this entry »

Unanswered Prayers?

prayer

Wytana and I met over 26 years ago and came from very different backgrounds. Wytana was from the south;  I was from the north. She was more country; I was more city. Wytana was a fan of country music (e.g. Alabama); I was a fan of rock n roll (e.g. The Cars).

One month after we started dating Read the rest of this entry »

Backwards?

This week our daughter Alli leaves for her freshman year of college and while we have been preparing emotionally to moving one step closer to an empty nest, Alli has had quite the summer. Besides the usual having out with friends and going to movies, Alli has taken an interest in all things outdoors. Her older brother took her shooting, she and a group of friends went “enoing” & frog hunting, and recently she and a few friends went to the mecca for outdoor enthusiasts, Bass Pro Shops.  While they were there Read the rest of this entry »

Our Will Be Done?

prayerNorth Point Community Church is currently in the middle of a great series (Red Letters Prayers) on prayer.  In the 1st part Any Stanley provides the best explanation of prayer I have heard – you can listen / watch it here: http://www.northpoint.org/messages/red-letter-prayers. This series really got me thinking about prayer Read the rest of this entry »
