The Devil Made Me Do It? Part 2

From 2011

the_devil_made_me_do_itAs I stated in part 1, most of us remember this line made famous by Flip Wilson’s character Geraldine on the 1970’s TV program “The Flip Wilson Show.”

But is this really true? Does Satan make us sin? It was a funny line on the TV show but a not-so-funny subject.

From part 1 last week we now know that there is a spiritual war taking place, that the enemy is Satan and his legions of followers, and how they attack.

#1 – Lets go back to how Satan attacks, Read the rest of this entry »

Love Hurts?

love hurts

I have been writing about how the Bible can be summarized by Matthew 22:36-40: “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Jesus replied: ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

These verses can be summarized as: love God; love people. Last week I wrote that because we love God and we are in a relationship with Him we will want to spend time with Him. Love is not about rules but about a relationship (Love Rules?).

How else are we to love God? Read the rest of this entry »

Love Rules?

Love Rules

I recently posted about life not being complicated (Life’s Complicated?) which attempted to answer the question: With all of the verses, commandments and instructions in the Bible how do we know what to do?

Jesus answered this in Matthew 22:36-40: “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Jesus replied: ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

These verses can be summarized by: love God; love people. So how do we do that? Specifically, how do we love God? Read the rest of this entry »

Life’s Complicated?

Life is ComplicatedSometimes we make life too complicated. A few examples come to mind:
  1. The IRS tax code – I am not sure it is even possible anymore to file your taxes without help.
  2. The NCAA guidelines – this past year one athlete who was given $1,000 was suspended for 3 games and another who was given $20 was suspended for 10 games.
  3. The Bible – 66 books, 1,189 chapters, 31,102 verses and 783,137 words – with all of that information how are we supposed to know what to do?

The last few weeks I have talked about the 3 prerequisites of being a disciple and the 3 pillars of being a disciple. This week I’m starting a new section: the products of being a disciple.

What do I mean by products of being a disciple? Read the rest of this entry »

The Lone Ranger?

The Lone Ranger

The last few weeks I have written about the prerequisites and pillars of being a disciple – Salvation, Surrender, the (Holy) Spirit, Supplication (Prayer), and Scripture. This week is the last pillar – Small groups (community).

There has been a story floating around in church circles for quite some time– not sure if it is real or just legend. The story goes something like this: Read the rest of this entry »

Got Him?

Got HimWith Derrick and Christie recently getting engaged all things wedding are on my mind and on my radar. I recently listened to an interview with Mike Grayson and his fiancée, Molly. Mike is the lead singer for the Christian band Mike’s Chair. Molly was telling the story of how Mike proposed last fall. After Molly finished her story she paused and said: “All I kept thinking was: I get him.” Molly was saying she was so thrilled to spend the rest of her life with Mike.

What came to my mind after hearing Molly’s story was this: Read the rest of this entry »

Mind Games?

transformation

P90X…Insanity…Crossfit…are all the rage. The main principle behind these workout programs is a theory called “muscle confusion.” The concept is that varying your workouts frequently dissuades the body from adapting to the workout regime and therefore growing and getting stronger quicker. Basically it is tricking your body into improving.

When it comes to improving/growing/transforming the mind however, confusion is not a good idea. Actually the mind works completely the opposite. “The more you focus on something — whether that’s math or auto racing or football or God — the more that becomes your reality, Read the rest of this entry »

A Change of Heart?

discipleshipRecently I wrote that many of us want the Savior part of Christ but not always the Lordship part. In other words, we want to benefits of spending eternity in Heaven but not the Lord-of-my-life on earth part: http://wp.me/p1QSbw-8n. In addition, placing Christ as Lord of our lives is deciding to become a Disciple and requires complete surrender: http://wp.me/p1QSbw-91

So if we decide we want to surrender and we want to be a Disciple – what does that look like? What do we do? Over the next three weeks I will address the “what do we do part” and then the “what does it look like part.”

I recently read about a survey conducted of church planting organizations. The purpose of the survey was to help determine what type of people makes the best church planters. They surveyed the top 100 church plant leaders worldwide. The top 100 had planted at least 20 churches in the last year and one planted 500 churches.

There was only common element among the group. They were from various countries, ethnic backgrounds, personality types, ages, men and women, different education levels, etc.

The only common element was……….. Read the rest of this entry »

SHES’ Hope

SHES

Of all of the stories and photos the last 48 hours the one that stands out to me was an interview a news channel conducted with Darrell Scott, the father of Rachel Scott. You will recall Rachel was the first murder victim in the Columbine High School shootings.

In the interview Mr. Scott was asked how long it took before life started to feel normal: “After about 2-3 years. But I think about Rachel every day and miss her every day. But even though I have not forgotten Read the rest of this entry »
